I’ve lowkey been getting interested in fighting games again. I saw a meme that was like favorite characters from every fighting game that I wanted to do but it was hard coming up with characters for some of them.
Street Fighter: Obviously Sakura Kasugano. She’s cute, reminds me of myself, and her playstyle is simple enough for an fgc idiot such as myself for me to understand. You’ll notice later on that many of these characters are too complicated for me to understand and I mostly like them for concept or design or something of that nature. Other favorites include Poison, Oro, Menat, and Akira. I’m also a pretty big fan of Ryu, Dhalsim, Blanka, Chun-Li, and Zangief if we’re talking about the world warrior characters. Ken, Honda, and Guile are of course iconic but in recent years I feel like they’ve become less and less interesting.
Mortal Kombat: So I actually have never been too interested in Mortal Kombat, and I’ve noticed a lot of the FGC shares that sentiment. There’s some cool characters but there’s never been any standouts to me. The closest thing I’d say to a standout character for me is Cetrion from 11, the only game in the series I’ve played. Scorpion was badass to me as a kid though but over the years I’ve kinda grown outta that. No offense he’s still awesome but y’know what it is.
Tekken: My earliest fighting game memories are with Tekken. I was at some kinda after school thing in kindergarten (it went up to K-5th Grade) and they had Tekken 5 and I remember watching the opening scene and the part where Jack’s face opens up and counts down and he explodes or whatever scared the living shit outta me and I remember being scared of just the name “Tekken” for years. Anyways flash forward to 2014 I’m 8 now and I’m like fuck it maybe I’ll try out Tekken 6. I really liked it! I’d never been too into fighting games before this so it was pretty cool. My main was Devil Jin just because I thought that was a badass name. Later I got into Tekken 7 and at first I mained Josie because I liked that there was Filipino rep in a fighting game, then I switched to Alisa because I thought her anime ass pink haired robot girl with chainsaw arms and combustible head i read an article all about concept was absolutely badass. Of course her controls are much more complicated compared to the simpler Josie but yeah. Heihachi and Roger are other cool characters but Roger hasn't been in a game since like 5 if I remember correctly.
Marvel vs. Capcom: I’ve played 3 a little bit. I like Tron Bonne as a character but gameplay wise? Yikes. Usually in 3 I play Ryu Chun-Li and Deadpool because I like to stick with what I know. If I played 2 though I’d definitely main Sakura because y’know thats my girl
King of Fighters: I do not know this series. I’ve heard of it but I don’t know much about it. I know Terry because of Smash but that’s it.
Guilty Gear: I’m gonna come right out of the gate and admit my first time hearing about this series was when Bridget was confirmed to be transgender. A couple months later I saw fanart of Elphelt and thought she was really cool looking. Bunnygirl? Check. Guns? Check. Flowers? Check. Four Leaf Clovers? Check. Everything about this character’s concept felt tailored to me for me to love her.
Skullgirls: So I’ve been a fan of Skullgirls for a loooong time. My modern-day interest in fighting games can be traced all the way back to this game right here. It all started with Robo-Fortune, the robot clone of Nadia Fortune who I would also main for a bit. I also really like Squigly and Filia. I have to admit, Parasoul is very pretty but something about her concept always made me uneasy, but thankfully that was retconned and removed entirely in recent years. (iykyk) I have another funny memory with this game, I’ve told this story before and I submitted it to Coney’s Cringe Confessional once. Anyways, I was playing Skullgirls Mobile in class and a friend of mine was watching and yelled out “WHAT THE FUCK?! WHY ARE HER BOOBS SO BIG?!” Anyways that kid is a father now, his daughter was born the day before my 19th birthday, crazy how time flies huh? Here I am still shitposting on Instagram and talking about anime girls and video games in my journal. Embarrassing. What else what else? Oh yeah! I tried to main Double for a bit but her playstyle was a bit too crazy for me to grasp. However, nowadays, and I’m sure you know this, my main is none other than Annie of the Stars! It’s cool seeing a character added to the game long after I started playing and it seemed like the roster of 14 wouldn’t get any new additions, but I also really think her concept is cool as hell. I also like her Star Butterfly alt color palette even if I’m still upset about how that show ended.
FighterZ: I’ve always thought Dragon Ball was cool as hell but I’ve always struggled to understand it. I like Android 21 especially her lab coat version and I’m sure you all know what that’s about. Lol. Videl is pretty cool too. I also like Vegeta (the cup) and Trunks (the drink) the fact that standard Goku and Vegeta are DLC in FighterZ is kinda weird to me but hey at least their Super Saiyan versions are there. I usually go Videl, Android 21 (Lab Coat), and Beerus. Beerus because he reminds me of my cat Scarlett, who actually went as Beerus for Halloween in 2022. I don’t remember if I ever showed the pictures here. Maybe I’ll show it again for the next Halloween journal entry. Scarlett is more so my mom’s cat than mine but yeah. Buddha is also my cat but he’s taken to my mom. Buddha is old as hell though and I don’t know how much longer he’ll be with us :( sorry that was sad… I just wanted to talk about that I love him he’s 12 years old though and his health is getting worse.
Blazblue: Not too familiar with this series but I downloaded the demo on Switch back in 2018 because I heard the game had RWBY characters, that’s about all I know regarding Blazblue.
Smash: I don’t know honestly. I’d say Kirby from 2014-2018, Pikachu from 2019-2021, and from there I’ve been rotating between Meta Knight, Lucas, and Isabelle. Smash has a lot of characters though so who knows really. Lol :3 as of recent I’ve had a bit of fun with Robin, please don’t get mad at me for that one though I know how the Smash community feels about Fire Emblem’s representation and I’d honestly agree with them for the most part. Actually lemme go on a side tangent here for a bit on who I think should stay and who should get outta here.
Marth - Obviously needs to stay. That’s John Fire Emblem right there
Roy - Your time is up buddy. No hard feelings
Ike - Ike who? Yeah same with you.
Robin - Awakening saved the series everyone knows this you can stay.
Lucina - Marth clone. Bye bye.
Corrin - FUCK OUTTA HERE. Fates was the bad one, and Smash 4 had SIX Fire Emblem characters at this point. Fates wasn’t even out yet in the west when they were announced lmao.
Chrom - Not sure because Roy clone but also a very important character to Awakening, which again saved the series? Neutral on this one.
Byleth - HEAR ME OUT. They can stay. Represents the weapon triangle well,giving them a unique playstyle compared to others, also Three Houses was the best selling FE game. I think they deserve to stay and the only reason they were negatively received was because they were the 8th Fire Emblem character. Five of which have blue hair, pronouns and swords. If we replaced Roy, Ike and Corrin with Lyn, Edelgard, and Anna I think that would be much better.
So yeah, that’s what my FE Smash Bros roster looks like: Marth, Lyn, Anna, Robin, Edelgard, Chrom, and Byleth. I think that’s pretty good.
Unist: What is this? No genuinely, what is this one? I’ve never even heard this name before. I just looked it up and apparently it’s Under Night in Birth. Yeah, I recognize THAT name. I’ve seen Carmine before and she looks pretty cool. Orie is a cutie, and Nanase is pretty. Vatista looks cool too. I might have to check this out at some point, who knows? :P
Melty: Never played it. I only know Neco Arc (IM SORRY) looks a little interesting though
Soul Calibur: I usually play my custom characters teehee. I do think Tira looks cute though but I’m not sure how to feel about her playstyle. Also some of the earlier games have some interesting guest characters for sure. Link? Yoda and Darth Vader? That’s insane!! Heihachi and Yoshimitsu from Tekken are also here if I remember correctly. I don’t play these games much honestly.
GBVS: Granblue Fantasy VS? Yeah I know nothing about this series beyond the name. Oops. Also the fact that in one of the games apparently the word Fagott, a word for bassoon in some other languages, was misspelled as the f-slur in the credits. I haven’t seen any evidence for this beyond one tweet joking about it, but that’s it.
Injustice: Injustice 1’s Story Mode was the first game I ever beat. I mained Doomsday as a kid and in 2 when he was removed I went with Atrocitus instead. Nowadays I main Harley Quinn because she’s my favorite DC character. I’m actually halfway decent with her. I’ve also liked playing as some of my other favorite DC characters such as Batman or Batgirl, who’s only in Injustice 1 but yeah
Darkstalkers: These games are so cool, my favorite has to be my girl Q-Bee though. I love bug girls as I’m sure all of you know, and she’s one of the coolest bug girls to ever bug girl. She’s only in the third game so I don’t really play the other two much if at all. I only have the Capcom Arcade Stadium versions of these games anyway, I’m probably gonna get the fighting collection at some point though. It’s sad that Darkstalkers is essentially a dead franchise because it’s really cool. I’d never heard of it until like two years ago. I'd seen Felicia before but I never knew who she was or where she was from.
Dead or Alive: This is the gooner game right? I don’t know anything about it.
Samsho: Another name I’ve never heard before.
Touhou: Originally it said “Waifu” but that word makes me physically recoil so I’ve chosen Touhou instead here. I main Aya and Patchouli in the older Touhou fighting games, and in the newer ones I main Sumireko and Mamizou. Phantasmagoria games too uhh, Dim Dream Rikako, Flower View Tewi, and Unfinished Dream Seiran or Mamizou.
Killer Instinct: Originally it said “SNES” but I don’t really know much about SNES fighting games aside from the previously mentioned franchises. Killer Instinct is a game I haven’t played since I was a kid, but there’s some sick ass characters I remember from these games. Cinder, Glacius, Orchid, Hisako, Spinal, etc. I should get back into this series fr.
Anime Arena: Apparently this is a whole type of fighting game and idk much about it but I’ve heard they tend to be ass so idk.
Brawlhalla: Originally said childhood main but I think I’ve talked in enough detail about those, so I’ll just choose a game I haven’t played since childhood, haha. I like Yumiko. Well, liked. Fait is pretty too… actually… Sigh.
Rivals of Aether: My personal Indie pick. I’m a Maypul girlie! I haven’t played Rivals 2 but it looks absolutely sick. A new character dropped today I think :P it’s cool how the game has no DLC and every new character is free now, more games should do that *wink wink*
All-Time Favorite: Sakura. It’s Sakura. No contest. Lmao.
